First Book: Roma Arroyo
Roma Arroyo is a historical fiction novel set in the 1880’s straddling Northern Mexico and Southern Texas. The two main characters are Elizabeth Arroyo, manager of Rancho Arroyo, and Will Austin, Sheriff of Roma, Texas. Will and his deputy are chasing escaped convicts from a Mexican prison, who brutally killed his wife, a bright, young doctor in town. Elizabeth fights to save Will’s life after he is shot in the chest during a gunfight while accidentally on her 500 acre ranch in Northern Mexico.
The story follows life on a large Mexican ranch and in a small town in Texas on the Mexican border during the time after the American Civil War and during the time Mexico re-builds itself into its own nation. Will tells his story as a boy orphaned at a young age in Boston and raised by his father’s relatives; his passionate quest to become a Texas Ranger, and how he eventually becomes sheriff of small-but-growing Roma, Texas. Elizabeth goes into detail of her joyous youth as a girl on a family farm near Atlanta prior to the Civil War; moving to San Antonio and attending a woman’s college; becoming a young teacher, and marrying charming Roberto, the head of expansive Rancho Arroyo.
